What the process actually involves

Pakistani passports are issued by the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports under the Ministry of Interior. Machine Readable Passports (MRP) are issued at regional passport offices, and the DGI&P also runs an online renewal service that delivers the booklet by courier for applicants who already hold a passport with matching biometrics.

Fees depend on three choices you make at application time: the number of pages (36 or 72 or 100), the validity (5 or 10 years) and the urgency category (normal, urgent or fast track). The combination is why two people quoting 'the passport fee' can be hundreds of rupees apart. The current schedule is published on the DGI&P website and is revised from time to time, so treat any figure quoted on a third-party site — including this one — as indicative only.

Application tracking uses the token or tracking number from the receipt issued when your biometrics were captured. The status moves through submission, printing and dispatch stages; once dispatched, the courier reference becomes the way to follow it.

Renewal does not require a police character certificate for most applicants, but the passport office can request additional verification where the CNIC record has changed. If you have never held a passport, the first application must be made in person.

Step by step

1. Decide page count, validity and urgency, then check the current fee on the DGI&P site.
2. Pay the fee through a designated bank branch or the online channel and keep the receipt.
3. Attend the regional passport office for biometrics and photograph, or use the online renewal service if you qualify.
4. Keep the token/tracking number from the receipt.
5. Track the application on the DGI&P portal until the booklet is printed and dispatched.
